Located in the Alqueva reservoir, the new photovoltaic plant, which is the largest existing in a hydroelectric dam in Europe, has 12,000 solar panels and will start operating in July.

According to a report by Público, two tugboats transported a complex of 12,000 floating solar panels, the size of four football fields, to the place where they were to be anchored.The new solar park has an installed capacity of five megawatts, according to Miguel Patena, EDP’s director of Innovation and responsible for the project. The reservoir’s solar panels will produce 7.5 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity for a year, and will be supplemented by lithium batteries capable of storing two GWh.The solar plant will supply energy to 1,500 families, which is equivalent to a third of the needs of Moura and Portel, two villages neighbouring the reservoir.
EDP already has plans to expand the Alqueva project. In April, it secured the right to build a second floating solar park with an installed capacity of 70 megawatts.PHOTO: EDP
